The Green Mountain National Park opened in June 2005 and was the first National Park on the island. Of great conservation and environmental importance, the park is home to a range of the island’s fauna and flora, including land crabs and six endemic plant species, which occur there in the wild and are also being propagated in nurseries. Green Mountain is also interesting from a historical context. The Norfolk Island pines found on Green Mountain were originally planted so as to provide timber for ships masts. The 300m-long tunnel originates from the 1830s and was dug so as to allow water to be pumped through the mountain. |
